Best Laser Printer for Home Use 2026

If you’re still using a cartridge inkjet at home, you’re probably spending more than you need to. Toner never dries out. Laser printers are three to four times faster, and the cost per page is lower. The question is which laser printer to buy.

I’ve used, tested, and recommended all of the models below. Every model has Wi-Fi, and all but one have auto-duplex. Those are the two features that matter most for home use.

What to Look For

A few things separate a good home laser from one you’ll regret:

• Mono vs colour: Mono costs half as much to buy and run. Unless you regularly need colour, go mono.
• Toner yield: Ignore the starter cartridge. Look at the high-yield replacement toner price and page count. That’s your real running cost.
• Wi-Fi: You want to print from your phone and laptop without cables. It is a practical necessity for home use in 2026.
• Auto-duplex: Double-sided printing. Saves paper, makes multi-page documents look professional.
• Footprint: Laser printers are bigger than inkjets. Measure your desk before ordering - I’ve seen people send printers back because they assumed it’d be inkjet-sized.

1. Brother HL-L2445DW - Best Overall

Price: £155.99 | Type: Mono | Speed: 32 ppm | Cost per page: ~1.5p

The Brother HL-L2445DW is the one I recommend to almost everyone. Fast, compact for a laser, and among the cheapest running costs on this list.

The TN-2420 high-yield toner cartridge delivers 3,000 pages for about £45. That’s 1.5p per page. Compare that with 5-10p on a cartridge inkjet and the savings are substantial. Even the standard TN-2410 (1,200 pages, ~£30) comes in at 2.5p. Brother also allows third-party toner, so compatible cartridges costing £12-15 can push the cost per page below 1p.

Features: Wi-Fi, auto-duplex, 250-sheet tray, USB, manual feed for envelopes. Brother’s iPrint&Scan app for mobile printing.

The downsides: It is a print-only model with no scanner, copier, or colour printing. The casing feels a bit plasticky if you’re used to office-grade equipment, but it is durable enough for home volumes.

Verdict: This is the one to buy if you don’t need scanning or colour. Most home users don’t need either.

2. HP LaserJet M110w - Best Compact Laser

Price: £74.97 | Type: Mono | Speed: 20 ppm | Cost per page: ~4p

The HP LaserJet M110w is tiny. It weighs under 4 kg and is barely bigger than a shoebox, making it easy to fit on a small desk or in a cramped home office.

Print speed is 20 ppm, slower than the Brother, but still on par with a decent inkjet. Text quality is excellent. Sharp, dark, professional.

The catches: HP pushes its HP+ programme during setup, which requires an HP account and an internet connection. You get a few months of included toner, but then you’re paying HP’s prices. The standard HP 142A cartridge does about 950 pages for ~£55 (5.8p per page). The 142X high-yield manages 1,500 pages for ~£60 (4p per page). Neither matches Brother’s costs. There is no auto-duplex, so double-sided printing requires manual flipping. The 150-sheet tray is also a bit small.

Verdict: Buy this only if desk space is your main concern. Otherwise, the Brother HL-L2445DW beats it in every other area, particularly running costs.

3. Canon i-SENSYS LBP243dw II - Best Build Quality

Price: £223.13 | Type: Mono | Speed: 36 ppm | Cost per page: Varies (genuine Canon toner)

The Canon i-SENSYS LBP243dw II feels more substantial than the Brother or HP. It is heavier and more solid, with a 900-sheet paper capacity.

It is the fastest on the list at 36 ppm, with a quoted 14-second warm-up time. It is built for a busy workflow rather than occasional use.

Features: Wi-Fi, auto-duplex, USB, 5-line LCD, mobile printing via the Canon PRINT Business app, AirPrint and Mopria support.

The downside: £223 for a print-only mono laser is hard to justify when a Brother MFP with scanning and copying costs less. Unless you specifically need the extra paper capacity, security features, or build quality, it is more printer than most homes need. It is also a newer listing on Amazon UK with a limited review history so far.

Verdict: Choose it for a home office that needs robust, business-grade paper handling. Most homes will not need the extra capacity.

4. Brother MFC-L2800DW - Best All-in-One

Price: £192.90 | Type: Mono MFP | Speed: 30 ppm | Cost per page: ~1.5p

The Brother MFC-L2800DW takes the same engine as the HL-L2445DW and adds scanning, copying, and faxing. Same TN-2420 toner, same 1.5p per page running costs.

The flatbed scanner digitises documents, and the 50-sheet ADF lets you scan multi-page contracts without standing over the printer. Copy quality is sharp.

Features: Wi-Fi, Ethernet, auto-duplex, ADF, fax, 250-sheet tray, USB.

The downsides: It is noticeably bigger than the print-only models and needs its own shelf or desk space. The button-based control panel feels dated compared with touchscreen models. The fax function will be unnecessary for most households, although it may still be useful when dealing with solicitors.

Verdict: The premium over the HL-L2445DW is easily justified if you need to scan or copy documents, even occasionally. It is one of the best-value laser multifunction printers you can buy right now.

5. HP LaserJet MFP M235sdw - Best HP All-in-One

Price: £145.98 | Type: Mono MFP | Speed: 27-28 ppm | Cost per page: ~4p

The HP LaserJet MFP M235sdw is HP’s competitor to the Brother MFC-L2800DW. It combines printing, scanning, and copying in a reasonably compact package. Build quality is solid and the HP Smart app is well made, although the ADF only scans one side at a time.

The problem: Running costs. HP’s toner still costs noticeably more per page than Brother’s. The Brother MFC-L2800DW does the same job at around 1.5p per page. Over 10,000 pages, that difference adds up.

Verdict: Only buy this if you’re already in the HP ecosystem or specifically want the HP Smart app. Otherwise, the Brother MFC-L2800DW does everything this does, for less money per page. Much less.

6. Brother HL-L3240CDW - Best Colour Laser

Price: £269.98 | Type: Colour LED | Speed: 26 ppm | Cost per page: ~6-8p colour

The Brother HL-L3240CDW suits people who regularly need colour laser-class printing at home. It uses Brother’s LED print engine rather than a laser, but the running-cost maths and output quality work the same way. It has separate toner cartridges for each colour, with high-yield options rated for 2,300 pages (black) and 3,000 pages (colour) per cartridge.

Colour output is good for charts, presentations, flyers, and school projects. It is not photo quality, as no colour laser or LED printer is, but it is more than adequate for business documents.

Features: Wi-Fi, Gigabit Ethernet, USB, auto-duplex, 250-sheet tray.

The downsides: Replacing a full set of colour toner costs £200+. The printer is big and heavy, so it takes up a fair amount of desk space. The 6-8p cost per colour page also adds up fast if you print a lot. Several reviewers flag a pushy EcoPro subscription prompt during setup. It is skippable, but this is not obvious.

Verdict: Only buy this if you regularly need colour documents printed at home and you don’t want to deal with inkjet clogging problems. For most people, a mono laser handles 90% of printing needs. The odd colour page? Get it printed at the library, Ryman, or your local print shop. Cheaper and better quality.

Mono vs Colour Laser: Do You Really Need Colour?

Most home users should choose mono for three reasons:

• Cost: Mono printers cost 50-60% less. Mono toner is 60-75% cheaper to replace.
• Reality check: 80-90% of home printing is black and white. Forms, letters, tickets, school worksheets, HMRC correspondence.
• Colour quality: Colour laser output is functional but uninspiring. If you need good colour or photo printing, you’re better off with a tank-based inkjet alongside your mono laser.

The Brother HL-L3240CDW makes sense if you regularly print colour business documents such as invoices, brochures, and presentations.

Third-Party Toner: Worth It?

Compatible toner cartridges are usually worthwhile. They cut running costs by 50-70%, and their quality has improved considerably. Output from most compatible cartridges is difficult to distinguish from genuine toner.

Brother printers are particularly third-party friendly. No aggressive chip-blocking, no firmware updates designed to lock out competitors (unlike HP, which has form for this).

A compatible TN-2420 for the Brother HL-L2445DW costs £12-15 vs £45 genuine. That brings cost per page below 1p, which is about as cheap as printing gets.

The small risk: Third-party toner can occasionally produce slightly lighter prints or leave more residue in the printer. I use genuine toner for important documents such as contracts or anything going to a client. For internal documents, school forms, and receipts, I use compatible toner.

My Recommendations

Best for most people: The Brother HL-L2445DW is fast, cheap, reliable, and compact enough for a desk. It suits most households.

Best all-in-one: The Brother MFC-L2800DW uses the same engine and adds scanning and copying for a premium. It is worth it if you scan even occasionally.

Best if space is tight: The HP LaserJet M110w is unusually small for a laser. Running costs are higher, though.

Best colour laser: Choose the Brother HL-L3240CDW only if you regularly need colour. Most people do not.
